A SHORT HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS MARIA DE MONTFORT ACADEMY

The Academy was born out of necessity. The need for a mission school had long been talked about as a means not just of spreading the Catholic Faith, but more importantly, of safeguarding the seed of Faith already sown by traditional Catholic parents in their children. Thus it happened that, in the year 2023, this burning desire was actualized as the nursery/primary section of the Academy began in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The school is located at No. 3, Nekede Old Road, Owerri. The Academy was founded at the instance of Most Rev. Bede Nkamuke, the Spiritual Director of the Society of Traditional Roman Catholics, Nigeria. It opened officially on Tuesday, 6th February 2023, with a total of sixteen (16) pupils and four (4) teachers, most of whom were parents who volunteered as teachers. At the time it opened, there was no resident priest domiciled in the Owerri mission. But as such a mission school could not function well without one, Rev. Fr. Ojeka Thomas was sent to be the first resident priest of both the mission and the new mission school. This beginning, as with every humble beginning, was fraught with great difficulties and challenges. Fr. Ojeka proved his mettle during this “baptism of fire.” With no prior experience and being freshly ordained, he had to shoulder a difficult responsibility. He guided this nascent school, setting up a structure and framework of daily operations which still endure till date.

Each day, academic activities begin with the Holy Mass, in keeping with the spiritual foundation upon which the Academy was established. The school authority, under the counsel of Most Rev. Bede Nkamuke, has offered scholarships based on free tuition and the provision of writing and reading materials to the less privileged, thereby extending the mission of faith and charity to families in need. Mrs. Chinyere Catherine Opara was the pioneer headteacher, but she left the school after about two months in charge. Other founding teachers were: 1. Mrs. Francisca Anaele 2. Mrs. Onyinye Igbokwe 3. Unknown 4. Unknown Mrs. Francisca Anaele became the headteacher after the pioneer left. She oversaw this office until 2025, when she voluntarily relinquished office to Mrs. Jerome Annastecia, who has held this office till date. As at February 2026, the Academy has graduated three (3) pupils into secondary education. The school is advancing each day and now has a total of eight (8) teachers, including the headteacher. The number of pupils has also increased from sixteen (16) pioneer pupils to twenty-six (26). From its humble beginnings, St. Louis Maria de Montfort Academy continues to grow in strength, faith, and academic purpose, remaining committed to the formation of young minds in sound education, discipline, and the traditional Catholic faith.
